Steaming geothermal waters. Sarah Milicich.
Kuirau Park is part of the larger Rotorua Geothermal System, where geothermal waters reach the surface and form pools. The largest and most well known of these is Kuirau Lake located on the northern margin of the park, and totalling over 3000 m2 in surface area. Water temperatures routinely reach 40-50 degrees Celsius.
Numerous other large geothermal pools are located on the fringes of the park. Some comprising of hot geothermal water, while others are a mix geothermal and shallow groundwater. The clear pools are often the hot water.
Be sure to stay on the safe side of the fence. Not only are some of these pools near boiling, but some of the mud on the fringes of the pools is near boiling and may bubble and spit hot mud with no notice.
